Securing Land for the Nyamache Shamba

In partnership with Bournemouth North Rotary Club & Norco

Creating sustainability, security and long-term opportunity in rural Kenya

In a major milestone for The Boo Charity’s work in western Kenya, we are proud to share that land has been officially acquired for the Shamba (farm) at Nyamache Life Skills Centre. This achievement was made possible through the generous support of Bournemouth North Rotary and Norco, and it represents a significant step forward in securing long-term food production, income generation, and hands-on agricultural education.

The Challenge: Rented Land

For many years, the Shamba operated on rented land, which limited planning, investment and long-term sustainability. Without ownership, there were ongoing uncertainties around renewal, expansion and the ability to embed the farm’s role in the college curriculum and the wider community economy.

The opportunity: Land Ownership

Thanks to funding from Norco and Bournemouth North Rotary, two adjoining plots of land have now been purchased - providing a secure base for the Shamba to grow and expand in the years ahead. This transition from rented to owned land enables strategic planning, deeper agricultural education and a stronger platform for food and income resilience at the centre.

  • “Owning the land changes everything. It gives us the freedom to invest in long-term growth, provide consistent nutrition, and build sustainable income streams. That’s vital in an economy where securing regular donations becomes more challenging each year.”

    - Russell, Founder of The Boo Charity

  • “The land ownership is a milestone for Boo Kenya. It gives security to grow more, feed more and learn more. This longevity wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of Bournemouth North Rotary and Norco - thank you."

Simon, Director of Kenyan Operations for The Boo Charity

  • “You have made it so we can scale our shamba. The benefits are so huge! Feeding our children, growing their knowledge, generating an income and providing jobs. Thank you so much”

Geoffery Gitau, Project Leader of Nyamache Life Skills Centre

  • “We are very proud owners of land, where we can continue to grow and support our children through food and economic income. Thank you Bournemouth North Rotary and Norco."

Elisha, Project Leader for The Boo Charity in Kenya

Why It Matters: Sustainability in Action

The Shamba is a core part of Nyamache’s sustainability model. Agricultural learning is integrated into the vocational curriculum alongside trade and business skills, giving students practical experience in planting, harvesting and enterprise. The produce grown feeds students and staff, while surplus crops are sold locally to generate income that is reinvested in the centre.

By owning the land, the centre can:

  • Produce nutritious food consistently for students and staff

  • Generate ongoing income through local produce sales

  • Expand agricultural training within the curriculum

  • Invest in future facilities, harvests and enterprise projects

This secure foundation strengthens Nyamache’s role as a platform for sustainable change - equipping young people with skills, confidence and the ability to support themselves and their families.

Sponsor Impact: Partnership That Lasts

This milestone was achieved through two key sponsors:

  • Bournemouth North Rotary - a long-standing partner of The Boo Charity. Their early support helped establish Nyamache Life Skills Centre, and their continued backing has enabled this pivotal investment in food security and sustainability.

• Norco - whose generous support for land acquisition has strengthened the Shamba’s long-term impact and capacity, further securing the future of agricultural education at the centre.

Giving opportunity, not charity.

For over twenty years, our mission has been to create platforms for change - opening new paths through education, empowerment, and entrepreneurial skills.

The land acquisition is not just about ownership — it is a cornerstone for future impact. With secure land, Nyamache Life Skills Centre can scale its agricultural programme, embed enterprise learning, and increase food and economic resilience in a rural area where formal employment opportunities are scarce.
