New Guard House at Nyamache: Supporting Sustainability from the Ground Up
We’re delighted to share another important step forward at the Nyamache Life Skills Centre - the construction of a new guard house at our recently secured shamba.
This was made possible thanks to the generosity of long-time supporter Kathy, who covered the full cost of the build. Kathy was part of the original team that helped research and establish the foundations of The Boo Charity, making this a truly full-circle moment. From the very beginning, Boo has been committed to sustainability - supporting projects that can stand on their own, grow over time, and create long-term opportunity. The shamba embodies this vision perfectly.

More Than Land: A Platform for Change
The shamba is far more than a piece of land. It is a platform for opportunity - for our training centre, our students, and the wider community.
Its purpose is fourfold:
Food security: Providing a reliable source of food so no student or staff member goes without.
Education: Teaching students how to use the land around them to grow crops efficiently for both personal use and income generation.
Income generation: Creating revenue that can be reinvested back into the shamba, making it self-sustaining, and supporting further improvements at the centre.
Local employment: As the shamba grows, so does our ability to create jobs and strengthen the local economy.
Skills in Action: Built by Our Students
One of the most exciting aspects of this project is that our welding and fabrication students played a direct role in the build. They designed and constructed the metal door and window for the guard house, and did an outstanding job. Seeing students apply their skills in a real-world setting is exactly what Nyamache Life Skills Centre is about.
Why the Guard House Matters
The guard house will sit at the entrance to the shamba, providing a secure base for staff working on the land and ensuring the safety of crops and equipment. It also offers a place for workers to take respite during long days in the field - a small structure with a big role in supporting daily operations.
We’re incredibly grateful to Kathy for her continued belief in Boo and our work. This guard house is not just a building - it’s another step toward a future where education, skills, and sustainability work hand in hand.
Thank you for helping us turn opportunity into lasting impact.
