Success Story: Janet
Janet graduated from Nyamache Life Skills Centre in 2012, completing a vocational course in dressmaking. Before she joined the centre, she often worried about her next meal. Today, her concerns are very different - she focuses on whether her businesses can provide for the next generation.
From Student to Entrepreneur
Starting with a small shop after graduation, Janet turned fabric into dresses and blouses, gradually building a loyal client base in her local area. Over the years, she expanded her business, sourcing the latest clothes from Nairobi and bringing them back to her rural hometown to serve women, men, and children alike.
Her husband, a teacher, has been a huge supporter, encouraging her ambition and celebrating her achievements. Janet now owns two plots of land - one for her home and the other for planting trees. Her shop not only provides a steady income but also employs her sister, giving her a chance to gain work experience and contribute to the family business.
Janet credits Nyamache Life Skills Centre with giving her the skills, confidence, and opportunity to transform her life. Without the vocational training she received, she believes she may have faced a life of poverty and insecurity. Today, she is thriving, supporting her family, planning for future growth, and building a sustainable livelihood.
Janet’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact vocational education and business skills can have in breaking the cycle of poverty and creating opportunities that ripple through families and communities.
