Success Story: Victor

In January 2024, Victor enrolled in our three-month computer course at the Nyamache Life Skills Centre. For most students, the programme lasts one term - but for Victor, it became a year-long journey of resilience, grit, and hope.

Every day, he walked 6 km across hills and rough terrain to reach the centre. His disability made the journey even more demanding, but he never missed a day and never once gave up. His determination quickly caught the attention of our trainers, who saw a young man with extraordinary potential.

A Family’s Sacrifice, a Community’s Support

Seeing Victor’s commitment, our team began working closely with his family to help him take the next step toward independence. His father, believing deeply in his son’s dreams, made an enormous sacrifice. He sold a cow so Victor could secure rent for a small space and purchase a printer to begin building a business of his own.

Through our Root Start-Up Programme, we were able to provide Victor with a refurbished computer, giving him the essential tools he needed to begin his entrepreneurial journey.

Together, we identified the perfect location for his new cyber shop: a small room right next to several local schools - an area where no similar services existed.

A New Chapter Begins

Victor hasn’t been in his shop long, but he’s already making an impact.

Students now visit him daily for:

  • Internet access

  • Printing and photocopying

  • Purchasing stationery

  • Buying fresh fruits such as avocados from a neighbouring farm

His warmth, reliability, and professionalism have quickly made him a respected figure in the community.

Despite these early successes, Victor still faces challenges. Because of his disability, he must continue living with his parents and commute each day between his village and Nyamache. His long-term goal is to grow his business enough to hire an employee to assist in running the shop, and another to support his personal care, allowing him to live independently.

A Young Man With Extraordinary Determination

We are incredibly proud of Victor and of his family, who stood by him every step of the way. His story is a testament to what can be achieved when opportunity, resilience, and community support come together.

Victor’s determination is inspiring. We have no doubt he will continue expanding his business and one day achieve the independent life he dreams of.

Nyamache Life Skills Centre

The Nyamache Life Skills Centre is fully supported by donations to The Boo Charity, as well as income-generating activities run on-site. Victor received his education free of charge thanks to the generous long-term support of Enhanced, based in Poole, UK. Enhanced has sponsored the computing course since 2019, helping it grow into one of our most popular programmes. Local community members now even pay to attend evening business and computing classes.

Alongside computing, we also offer courses in:

  • Dressmaking & Tailoring

  • Welding & Fabrication

  • Hair & Beauty

All students additionally take part in Agri-business studies, ensuring they gain practical and sustainable skills for the future.
