New Kitchen at Nyamwanga Thanks to One World Group Oxted
Have you ever cooked with firewood? It’s slow, smoky, and back-breaking work. Now imagine doing it every single day for more than 450 students and teachers.
That’s the reality the incredible cooks at Nyamwanga Primary School have faced for years.
The current setup means:
Fuel that is unsustainable and costly
A cooking environment that is smoky, sooty, and poorly ventilated
Working conditions that are far from optimal for the staff who care for these children every day
CGI of new KIMMTA building, due to be completed January 2026
Nyamwanga School
Nyamwanga Primary School sits in rural Kenya, around two hours from Kisumu. Disconnected from major economic hubs, the community faces deep poverty, limited employment opportunities, and very little infrastructure.
Yet, despite these challenges, Nyamwanga is a pocket of joy - a safe, vibrant haven where children come eager to learn and dream of a brighter future. Led by the dedicated Madam Eunice Toto, the school carries a powerful sense of community, with multiple generations of families passing through its doors.
At Boo Charity, we support the ECD (Early Childhood Development) classes - children aged 4–7 - by providing monthly food supplies and covering teacher salaries. Before we increased food donations in 2022, we heard heartbreaking stories of young learners walking kilometres on empty stomachs, arriving exhausted, and often leaving halfway through the day because they simply couldn’t concentrate through hunger.
Today, things are different. Every child receives morning porridge and a substantial lunch (often rice and beans), ensuring they have the fuel to learn. Attendance has risen, cohorts have grown, and teachers say this foundation keeps students thriving well into later school years.
The Opportunity
Thanks to the incredible generosity of One World Group Oxted, we’re able to take this positive impact even further.
In loving memory of Jenifer Ruxton, we are building a permanent kitchen at Nyamwanga. This new structure will include:
Proper ventilation
Safe, durable work surfaces
Energy-efficient gas cookers, reducing reliance on firewood
A much cleaner, safer, and more dignified workspace for the cooks
This upgrade will not only reduce health risks from smoke exposure but also improve efficiency in meal preparation and the overall sustainability of the feeding programme.
The Boo Charity team is deeply grateful to One World Group Oxted for their support. Our teams in Kenya and the UK are excited to see this new kitchen transform daily life at Nyamwanga. Construction is already underway and scheduled for completion before the new school year in January 2026.
