KIMMTA Hub Rebuild
In partnership with Bournemouth North Rotary Club
Transforming Learning for the Children of Kibera
For nearly 20 years, the KIMMTA centre has been a lifeline for vulnerable children in Kibera, Nairobi. With support from Bournemouth North Rotary Club via the Marjorie Gordon Fund, The Boo Charity has rebuilt the hub into a permanent, purpose-built facility - creating a safe, inspiring environment where young people can learn, play, and thrive.
This project represents a milestone in our mission of giving opportunity, not charity, turning a small initiative into a platform for lasting community impact.
Our Partnership with KIMMTA
Our relationship with KIMMTA began almost two decades ago as a small initiative focused on keeping children off the streets through sport. Over time, it has grown into a vital community hub - a place where children are safe, supported and given access to opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.
Today, KIMMTA provides:
Playgroup, PP1 and PP2 classes during the day
Afterschool study programmes in the evenings
Weekend empowerment classes and football clubs
KIMMTA has become a trusted, inspiring environment where children are encouraged to learn, grow and believe in their potential. We are incredibly proud of how this partnership has developed and excited for what lies ahead.
The opportunity
Before the rebuild, KIMMTA operated from a semi-permanent mud and corrugated iron structure. The facility:
Could only serve 70–80 pre-school children during the day
Offered limited evening space for around 200 students
Provided unsafe, weather-vulnerable classrooms that restricted programme delivery
While beloved by the community, the old structure constrained what KIMMTA could achieve.
With the new permanent hub, the centre now has the capacity to reach up to 200 pre-school children and 500 older students during afterschool and weekend programmes. Additional classrooms, safe infrastructure, and future expansion potential open the door to enhanced early years education, outdoor play areas, and extended empowerment programmes.
What people are saying
The build
Thanks to Rotary funding, the old structure was replaced with a durable brick-and-concrete facility. Key features include:
Larger classrooms and flexible learning spaces
Safe, weather-resistant infrastructure with proper ventilation
A secure environment with robust doors and windows
Scope for future expansion, including additional levels
Facilities designed to host both educational and community programmes
Construction was completed in January 2026, marking a transformational moment for students, staff, and the wider community.
The impact
The new hub already demonstrates measurable outcomes:
Capacity doubled: 200 pre-school children and 500 students supported
Safe learning environment: children and staff now protected from harsh weather
Expanded programmes: more afterschool, weekend empowerment, and football sessions
Community engagement: increased participation from parents and local leaders
Future growth potential: scope for additional classrooms, outdoor areas, and early years facilities
This build not only improves immediate learning conditions but lays the foundation for decades of sustainable change, helping children break cycles of poverty through education and skills development.
The New Hub
We are deeply grateful to Bournemouth North Rotary Club and the Marjorie Gordon Fund for their vision, generosity, and commitment to creating lasting opportunities. Your support has made a real difference - from the first brick laid to the smiles of students walking into their new classrooms.
